The Hadrian’s Wall trail is a nationally recognised walk covering 84 miles through a variety of landscapes and even inclduing a couple of film sets en-route. For the most part of the 84 mile trek, the terrain crosses grass fields and encounters tarmac in the built up areas with the most challenging being the central section.
This is a 23 mile section which runs from the Birdoswald Roman Fort, just outside of Gilsland, to Chollerford where walkers encounter steep climbs and sharp descents in close succession, with this promising some of the most unforgettable memories.
The entire walk for East to West or vice versa takes around 5- 7 days to complete depending on the fitness of the participants. The Wall has many points of interest worth taking the time to take in and learn about the incredible feat of construction this was. Forts and settlements accompany the route and enjoying these are an integral aspect of any trail walk.
The management of Hadrian’s Wall have a Code of Respect visitors are expected to follow in order to preserve this for future generations. Excavation is an ongoing process and is expected to continue for at least another 200 years – we have barely touched the surface of what lies beneath.
Simple guidelines are:
- Take care where you walk
- Follow signposted routes ONLY
- Never walk on the Wall
- Avoid walking in single file – wherever possible, walk side by side to preserve the ground
- Take litter away with you
- Always close gates and doors
We look forward to welcoming you to our Wall in the North.
